Canyon Rim Campground, USFS, Flaming Gorge, Utah

May 5 to May 6, 2017

Wanting a break from the heat we headed UP to Flaming Gorge Utah.  Cinco de Mayo so we stopped for lunch at Plaza Mexicana in Vernal, UT.  It had good reviews but I found it a bit heavy on the fat.  Ricks mole was ok – not up to the Red Iganua standards that Scott and Joyce rave about.

Cinco de Mayo in Vernal, UT

Not the best Carne Asada – but the decor was nice.

We had numerous USFS campgrounds enroute – but they were all closed – finally we wedged into some tent sites at Canyon Rim Campground.  Only one other group there so we decided to fudge the rules a bit.  We didn’t mean no harm.  Nice location – spectacular views into Flaming Gorge from the camp ground.

Day 1 we went for a neighborhood road bike ride – out to the Flaming Gorge visitor center and then up to the highway to recon some wedge off roads that looked promising.  We did find several wedge off possibilities – but being settled in we decided to just stay where we were.  We were blown back to the van on what looked like the winds before a deluge.  It never actually dumped – but there was some awesome wind.

Day 2 Woke up to blue skies.  Rick went for a run and I had fun exploring via my mountain bike.  First the Canyon rim trail – then some roads/trails that were on Gaia.  Fun way to explore.
