Gila Hot Springs Ranch CG, Gila Hot Springs, New Mexico 12 miles

Oct 22, 2018

Snag a spot at the Hot Springs Ranch CG then head to the visitor center and hike the 1 ½ mile cliff ruins trail. Great ruins.

History note from the NPS:

“For thousands of years, groups of nomadic people used the caves of the Gila River as temporary shelter. In the late 1200’s, people of the Mogollon Culture decided it would be a good place to call home. They built rooms, crafted pottery and raised children in the cliff dwellings for about twenty years. Then the Mogollon moved on, leaving the walls for us as a glimpse into the past.”

Stop for a hike but the rain starts before we get out of the van.  Retreat to Gila Ranch CG on the river.  Three outdoor, man made, but natural looking pools make for nice soaking options.  More of an old hippi vibe than the more developed Campbells RV park.  No water or electric at the sites – but all the hot water you need if you don’t mind hauling it.  We rigged up our latest plan for an outside shower curtain.  Went well, seems like it should work.  Big lightening show and heavy rain started around midnight.
